Riding a bike can be dangerous for countless reasons. Aside from threats that do not involve drivers, such as a bicyclist pushing themselves even though they have certain health concerns, there are many bicycle accident risks which directly involve drivers. For example, some drivers do not pay attention while on the road, operate a vehicle while intoxicated or go over the speed limit. Speeding is especially concerning when it comes to bicycle accidents and the lives of many bicyclists have been claimed as a result of this reckless behavior.
When a driver surpasses the speed limit, they may be more likely to collide with a bicyclist for different reasons. First, they may not be able to slow down in time to avoid a bicyclist who is trying to cross the road or riding alongside the road. Drivers who reach excessive speeds may veer off of the road and strike someone who is riding in a bike lane, or they may not have enough time to respond to hazards and situations on the road. This behavior can be especially dangerous when it occurs on sharp turns or steep inclines.
Sadly, many drivers will continue to speed, and some regularly drive much faster than they are allowed to. Speeding has caused many bicycle accidents, some of which have utterly destroyed the lives of victims and their loved ones.
If you were hit by someone who was speeding or behaving recklessly in any other manner, it would be wise to learn your legal rights.
