Fred W. DeVore III

Biography:

Fred W. DeVore, III is a civil litigator, who focuses his practice in the areas of catastrophic injury, wrongful death, construction litigation, insurance bad faith, contract litigation and condemnation law. Throughout his distinguished career, he has served as lead counsel on numerous cases and has handled more than 50 appellate matters in the North Carolina Court of Appeals, North Carolina Supreme Court and the United States Fourth Circuit and is licensed to practice before the United States Supreme Court.

In 2022- 2023, Fred and his retired partner, Bill Acton, obtained a $20 million settlement in a personal injury matter, which was the largest recovery in the state for that year. In that same year, Fred was associated with another firm in a wrongful death action, and together, they obtained a settlement that ranked in the top 50 wrongful death settlements in the United States.

Also, during that same time period, working with partners Will DeVore and Derek Adler, they recovered in excess of $6 million dollars in the property damage claim.

Fred has tried or settled many matters in excess of $1 million. Some examples of that include:

• In 2017, Fred, Will DeVore and Derek Adler settled a personal injury matter for over $7 million dollars.
• In 2015, while working with another firm, obtained a verdict of $9 million dollars in a triple wrongful death claim.
• Fred has obtained two insurance bad faith verdicts in excess of $1 million dollars and has one of the few reported punitive damages verdicts against an insurance company.
• In 2006, he and his partner, Troy Stafford, obtained a settlement of over $10 million for an injured client.

A national publication known as “Best Lawyers in America” named Fred as “2018 Lawyer of the Year – Personal Injury” which is an honor based entirely on the vote of his peers. In 2015, Charlotte Magazine named identified Fred as one of the top 100 trial attorneys in North Carolina and in the top 25 in Charlotte.

Additionally, Fred is a frequent lecturer to various bar and judicial organizations, focusing on issues including the use of technology in mediation and at trial.

He is the former President of the Mecklenburg County Bar. He recently completed his appointment to the Disciplinary Hearing Commission for the State Bar where for several years he presided over trials litigating alleged attorney violations of the North Carolina Rules of Professional Conduct. In 2023, he was elected by the his peers in the Mecklenburg Bar to serve as a State Bar Councilor and is currently a member of the State Bar Grievance Committee.

Fred also serves on the board for Rainbow Ministry (a non-profit organization addressing needs of young adults with special needs) and, the Catawba Riverkeepers (a non-profit entity that monitors water quality along the Catawba River). He is a trustee for the Western Conference of the United Methodist Church.

Fred is married to Amy DeVore and both grew up in Charlotte. Will DeVore is Fred’s son and law partner in the firm.
